2002 | Cocks and bulls in Cuba

The text constitutes a deep search in the history of cockfights and bullfights which took place in the Island, especially in the foundational period of Cuban history that covers from the beginnings of the 19th Century up to 1902, birth of the pseudo-republic.

The study of these ludic phenomena and their relationships with the historical, social and political environment sheds a new light on the increasing knowledge of our cultural roots, supported by many sources and a rich and illustrative bibliography. The originality of its approaches and the established systematizing offer a certain quality and an updated historiographic perspective to this work.

Its ethnological depth enriches the critical heritage on the public spaces in our colonial period and in the beginning of this republic, and it deepens the interpretation of our traditional and popular parties. By these means, it is possible to penetrate in angles of our historical reality which remained unknown or without been sufficiently examined and which have to do with Cuban people's daily life through many periods.

The analysis carried out unravels the linguistic and identity implications which are derived for the formation of certain phenomena of nationality and the presence of cockfights and bullfight in Cuba during the chosen periods. It characterizes both public spaces, it determines their classist and cultural atmospheres and it extracts their relationships with power. The precise language, the conceptual wealth, the expositive ease characterize his analytic speech.

At the same time, the author reveals the negative North American influences that distorted cultural traditions developed at the beginning of the 20th century for more than two centuries.

The originality and thoroughness with which the analyzed topic is approached are remarkable; for this reason, it is a merit the excellent expositive quality of the research's results and the methodological elements that it provides to future studies in this field.
