Summary: AIDS control program, begun by MINSAP in 1986, has had the support of a group of institutions that have carried out the task of developing state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic means, as well as looking for new effective forms for their application in patient’s integral assistance, in the concrete conditions of our country. To the beginning of 1990, more than 60% of the population and 90% of the sexually active population of the country had been examined. Nowadays, 70% of the national need for AIDS research is covered with autochthonous productions that include microELISA kits and automated research by means of SUMA ultramicroanalytic system. On the other hand, encouraging results have been obtained in the delay of the development of this disease in asymptomatic carriers, with the use of Interferon Alpha (recombinat or leukocytic) produced in the country, and that have been useful to carry out some of the most massive and undoubtedly longest clinical application trials carried out in the world.PERFORMERS: Civil Defense Research Laboratoty, Center of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Sanatorium of Santiago de Las Vegas, National Center of Scientific Research, Center of Immunoassay.
