1989 | Obtaining a vaccine against Hepatitis B virus by DNA recombination in yeast

Summary: Through procedures of genetic engineering, it was cloned the gene that codes for the surface antigen of Hepatitis B virus in yeasts. It was established an own purification system, based on the physicochemical and chromatographic properties of the recombinant antigen and in the use of an immunoaffinity matrix elaborated with monoclonal antibodies designed and obtained with the characteristics required for this purpose. There were established or adapted the procedures necessary for the identification and complete characterization of the recombinant antigen, as well as for the controls of the process and of the product's quality, according to international demands, and it is also used an ELISA analytic system developed to this specific end. Finally, there were carried out the necessary preclinical and clinical studies, as well as the trials of effectiveness in the newborns of infected mothers, to create later the Sanitary Registration of the product, which was approved in Cuba. This vaccine represents an exportable fund, for which buyers from several countries are already interested. The registration management and commercialization of this vaccine in other contries have already started. On the other hand, it is available to our country a product that would be inaccessible for its high price in vaccination campaigns to risk groups and general population.
