Summary: There were developed and carried out eight new varieties that, at the end of 1990, occupied 23,9% of sugar cane area, at the same time that other 16 are extended with local character and are still being evaluated. Four of the eight varieties recommended are resistant to coal, one of the other four has an intermediate resistance and three from intermediate to susceptible. There are 16 somaclones in extension coming from the varieties C-87-51, CP-52-43, MV-5450 and B-4362, improved for agricultural yield, flowering, coal and rust, respectively. The somaclones reach 200 caballerias approximately at the moment. One of the most outstanding is CC 105-82 that will begin its generalization in Camagüey in 1991. The rest is in evaluation phase facing the main diseases. Other promissory somaclones of Ja 64-19, C 87-51, Ja 60-5 and POJ 2878 are in field phase, with good behavior when faced with drought, salinity, rust, coal and sugar content, respectively.
