1989 | Application of molecular biology in the study of leukemias, lymphomas and the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Main author: Eva Svarch Guerchikoff
Summary: Obtaining monoclonal antibodies and preparing molecular probes that allow analyzing the genes of immunoglobulines and the receiver of T cells directly, are two advanced methods that allow the precise characterization of leukemic cell type, which constitutes an important fact for the prognosis and treatment of these diseases. There were studied 130 patients with different types of leukemias and related states through the application of these techniques, which allowed improvements in the diagnosis, classification and treatment of these patients, as well as a better prognostic evaluation. It was also deepened the knowledge on the biology of these diseases’ malignant cells. It was introduced and evaluated in Cuba a protocol of the Latin American Group for the Treatment of Malignant Hemopathies, which was applied to 105 children and 122 adults affected by acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It was obtained 95% in children of complete remissions; and in adults, 68% in patients of high risk and 80% in those of intermediate risk. Survival's duration after five years was of 60 % in children, 78% in those of low risk; 32% in adults of high risk and 63% in those of intermediate risk. Once the five-year period had passed, there were 142 patients with suspended treatment, that is to say, with more than 80% of probabilities of definitive cure. The protocol combines different cytostatics in different stages of the treatment, with an increase of the habitual doses in many of them and a wide support of antimicrobials and sanguine components to combat the main complications. The results are comparable to those obtained in developed countries. The protocol has been generalized in the provincial hospitals of the country.PERFORMERS: Institute of Hematology and Immunology, Hospitals: "Hnos.Amejeiras, Carlos J.Finlay",   "William Soler”, Pedro Borrás", "Joaquín Albarran", "Salvador Allende", Provincial Pedriatic Hospitals of Pinar del Rio and Santa Clara.
