1996 | Computerized system to register the electric activity of deep structures of the central nervous system

Summary: This work describes the conception, design, implementation, validation and exploitation of a computarized system to register, process and analyze the electric activity of deep structures of the Central Nervous System. It was developed in the International Center of Neurological Restoration, with the objective of introducing a state-of-the-art surgical technique in the country: the Functional Stereotactic Neurosurgery guided by deep registrations of the brain with semi-microelectrodes. The system of programs, already registered in MINSAP like a medical equipment called "NDRS", allows carrying out, with a personal microcomputer, the functions in real time of an oscilloscope, of a special multichanel recorder, and of different signal processors, that is why it represents an important economic saving, with import substitution (more than 50 000 USD). But also, the new graphic possibilities that it provides for the anatomo-physiologic correlation during the surgical act and the automation of many processes, facilitate the medical team’s work, offers more reliability, and have allowed reducing surgical time, which makes it a highly specialized exportation product (its first international commercialization contributed more than ~30 000 USD to the country). So far, the system has been successfully used in more than 130 operations of Neurotransplants, Thalamotomies, Pallidotomies and Subthalamotomies, in national and foreign patients (in this last case it represented an income between15 000 USD and 30 000 USD per intervention), for the control of some disabling symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
