1996 | Family of NEURONICA equipment to register sensory responses and muscular activity

Summary: NEURONICA equipment is dedicated to register and analize cerebral responses provoqued by stimulation (evoked potentials EP) and muscular activity (Electromyography, EMC). For the joint research with the CDC of Atlanta (carried out in Pinar del Rio), it was introduced to the equipment a series of technical stimulations in the visual stimulator and in programs to gather and analyze cerebral responses, very novel from the scientific point of view. This allowed increasing the visual EP’s diagnostic sensibility from 67% to 98%. Another important clinical application of NEURONICA was the intraoperating monitoring, which offers the surgeon real time information about the possible damage on the nervous system. In this sense, there were also designed in the center calculation programs and technical modifications in the equipment. The intraoperating monitoring system implemented in NEURONICA, the inquiry auditory program and the series of NEURONICA 02 equipment were scientific achievements in the CMC and have received awards from the Academy of Sciences as the most relevant results from the scientific and social points of view. At the moment, the validation and design work of EP and EMG equipment is ending (after more than a decade), with a new NEURONICA 4 system that represents an important technological advance. In the case of auditory application, it was developed an expert system that allows the interpretation of the results and the automatic comparison with Cuban normative data, which was also an applied scientific achievement. This new equipment fulfills the standard of electric isolation IEC601-1-84 CLASS 1 type BF; for this reason it is prepared to be used in operating and therapy rooms. Functionally, the system can almost be totally configured from the computer, which provides a great versatility to carry out different applications. These advantages, besides its small size and plastic exterior design that guarantee the necessary isolation and aesthetics, have allowed its introduction in the industrialized countries’ market.
