Summary: There were characterized in this work the isolations of SCMV in Cuba and the resistance sources for these. It was created a methodology that perfects the selection system of varieties resistant to this virus, in the National Program of Sugar Cane Genetic Improvement. There are gathered the 105 most complete results carried out in the country, on the characterization of this diseases and, in general of potyvirus, for which modern biochemical, ultrastructural and diagnostic techniques have been used, some of which for more than five years for the diagnosis of SCMV, sorghum mosaic virus (SrMV) and maize dwarf mosaic virus (VDMV) in Cuba. Finally, if this methodology is not introduced in the Programs of Resistance Improvement, varieties susceptible to the mosaic can be riskly sown.
