Summary:

Bovine mastitis is the main problem of milk cattle raising in Cuba and at world level. The disinfection of post-milking nipples with an effective product is the internationally recognized procedure to reduce the intramammary new infections until in 50%. UDERTAN is a natural product developed at the National Center of Agricultural Sanity as post-milking mammary disinfectant. Its active principles are obtained from the plant Rhizophora mangle L., in an extraction process in watery environment and properly formulated with the presence of preservers and emollient. For its scientific novelty, it was presented as a patent in Cuba and accepted by the PCT (82 countries), with a recognition at international level when obtaining silver medal in the commercial fair which took place in Geneva in 1997, and it received the provincial outstanding prize in the XII Science and Technique FORUM. These results also constitute the register document approved at the beginning of 1998.

The preclinical, pharmaco-toxicological and clinical evaluations demonstrated the effectiveness of the product facing the main pathogens which cause bovine mastitis, and its advantages in terms of security for men and animals. On the other hand, the effectiveness obtained in flocks belonging to several cattle areas of the country evidenced a significant reduction on the prevalence of subclinical and clinic mastitis, a reduction percentage in Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae and subclinical mastitis of 63.73, 69.11 and 61.93, respectively. Besides, its non-irritant action for the skin, the accelerating effect of wounds' cicatrization, its solubility in water, its color, the non-existence of residuals in milk and the presence of a reddish pellicle which helps protecting among milkings, constitute important aspects that characterize this product and confer advantages on it regarding chemical mammary disinfectants.

These results are obtained through the integration of multiple studies in the scientific, methodological and practical order that facilitates a bigger development from Cuban milk cattle raising, preventing new intramammary infections and improving the quality of milk.
