The work offers a valuable and detailed information on one of the less studied and most unknown fields of Cuban history, in general, and on linguistics in our country, in particular. This research attracts the reader for its compiled historical documentation and for its novel and scientist approach, besides its pleasant reading. The author proposes and supports a new chronological division as for the specific development of Latin teaching and its academic use in Cuba, in opposition to the prevailing of Antonio Bachiller y Morales.
This exhaustive research allows determining the reach of classic languages' studies in Cuba and, in particular, of Latin. It lays the foundations that contribute to the study of Latin classic authors’ presence in Cuban, literary, dramatic, juridical and scientific authors in general, as well as the analysis of Latin use in all kinds of documents, including religious documents. Also, it characterizes the works written in Latin in our country or by Cuban authors and it specifies the particularities of Latin scientific translation in Cuba. We should not forget that Latin acted in our country, as in other Spanish American regions, as the communication means of science and culture; for this reason, this circumstance confers it a singular importance in order to know better our cultural history in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
This work of eminent linguistic orientation, offers very useful information to historians, philosophers, writers and scientists in general.
