Summary:

The human recombining Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein which stimulates the differenciation of red blood cells to a bone marrow level; for this reason, it is indicated in order to rise or maintain the erythrocites’ level in blood, and therefore to reduce the number of necessary transfussions in these patients.

Its industrial production means important technological challenges for the cultivation at large scale of superior cells (so far, not faced by Cuban biotechnology) and for the molecule’s structural complexity.

The technology developed in the Center for Molecular Inmunology (CIM) solves these problems through the fermentation of CHO cells (cells from Chinese hamster’s ovary) in two cultivation systems: Hollow Fiber and Agitated Tank and the use of affinity chromatography by metallic ions. Another relevant aspect of the technological package mentioned in this work is the adaptation of complex analytic techniques to characterize the molecule’s structural refinement.

The result has sanitary record and patent request in Cuba and 15 countries.

Obtaining human recombining Erythropoietin‘ s in sufficient quantity for its clinical use has had a considerable impact in our country, widening its indications to correct anemia associated to several diseases.
