1999 | The digestive enzymes of the white shrimp Penaeus schmitti (new knowledge of this species and application to shrimpculture)
Main executives entity: University of Havana (UH)
Main author: Alina Forrelat Barrios, Rolando González Valdés y Olimpia Carrillo.
Summary:

These results are obtained after more than ten years of research work, in which there are so many novel results for world Science as successfully already applied in Cuba, some of the first are:

  • the study of ontogenetic and chronobiological changes of digestive enzymes' activity in this species;
  • the determination of the effect of feeding time and photoperiod on digestive enzymes (general proteolytic activity) in a crustacean;
  • the information about the presence of a trypsin endogenous inhibitor in a crustacean' hepatopancreas;
  • the information of chymotrypsin type activity in this species' hepatopancreas;
  • the development of methods to evaluate the protein quality of foods for shrimps, as well as the use of alimentary additives.

Some of results which have been already applied to shrimp culture are:

  • the use of a product obtained from the shrimp itself (hematopancreatin) for the evaluation of diets aimed at cultivating these species;
  • the validation of a method of in vitro protein digestability, using the multienzymatic preparation already mentioned;
  • the demonstration of the use of incorporating digestive enzymes in adult shrimp in the diet of initial stages of development of this species (postlarvas);
  • the formulation of an artificial food better adapted to the digestive physiology in each stage of development of this species;
  • the determination of the effects of external factors (such as level of illumination and schedule) and internal factors (age) has allowed making studies about diet and nutritional requirements in this species;
  • the development of a methodology to increase the growth speed of shrimp postlarvas

It has the following scientific references:

  • 6 international scientific publications (1 in Aquaculture, of Elsevier Publishers, 4 in Memoirs of international congresses on Acuicultura, Aquatic Nutrition and Crustaceans and 1 in Crustacean Nutrition Newletters);
  • 8 scientific publications in Cuba;
  • 2 doctorate theses in Biological Sciences.

The introduction reference of the results to social practice is the Certificate of Invention Patent.
