The industry of dextran derivatives has had a vertiginous development in the last years, mainly due to the use of these products in clinical-therapeutic treatment of animals and human beings. The high prices in the international market make of these products an important line, which is mainly aimed to develop synthesis technologies that allow the directed and controlled production of dextran of pre-established molecular weights. In this sense, one of the biggest obstacles is to have enough quantities of purified dextransucrase that allows the controlled synthesis of dextran through economic processes.

The works included in this result constitute a knowledge contribution inside the subject of dextrans and even more inside the polymers as a way to increase their added value and revitalize the industry of sugar derivatives.

There are some outstanding contributions in this result, such as:

  • Definition of the biotechnical outline of optimized production of dextransucrase enzyme, with results that triplicate the traditional activity levels. The development of a procedure to increase this production to 2 000 liters, show its feasibility and reproducibility;
  • Definition of a technological outline of concentration and enzymatic purification of dextransucrase not reported so far, which uses diafiltration with calcium chloride and PM100 membranes, achieving an enzyme of 3,3 times of higher activity and 7 times of purity values, reproducible to 200 liters and with yields of 93%;
  • Introduction of fractioning and purification techniques for Ultrafiltration membranes, not reported so far, for the processing of the dextran mixture with important advantages in relation to the traditional process of ethanolic fractioning when reducing the energetic and plant investment's costs;
  • Design of an economic procedure for the synthesis and purification of an Iron-dextran complex for the treatment of hypochromic anemia in animals, starting from the previous formation of b Fe OOH (iron oxihydroxide). It was carried out a study of characterization and the evaluation and selection of the appropriate equipment, with the objective of introducing the process in industrial production.

The structure of iron dextran complex and oxihydroxide was compared with samples of human and veterinarian use (Inferon and Imposil) of FISON company, through x rays diffraction, Infrared and Mossbauer spectroscopies and differential thermal analysis, being determined that all the iron-dextrans have the same chemical nature, and that national product is not different from those imported. The knowledge of the processes involved in the production of the complex, allowed making the appropriate modifications for the production of an oral administration variant presented to the registration of medications. This form of antianemic product has not been previously described and it was object of Patent of Invention in 1997.

There were carried out stability trials and clinical tests to determine the innocuousness, toxicity, quality control and effectiveness of the product of veterinarian use conceived in injectable and oral dose. There have produced 200 million doses that have been used by LABIOFAM, Ministry of the Sugar (MINAZ), Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI) and Ministry of the Interior (MININT) which have manifested their satisfaction by means of reference letters. This product has a registered trademark (FERRIDEX), and has given rise to 15 publications, several in impact magazines, a doctorate thesis has been defended, and 24 works have been presented in international events.
