2000 | Health and ecosyistem: an integrated approach for research. The example of Centro Habana.

Summary:

It is a research designed to evaluate the health levels and their relationships with social and environmental determinants, carried out in Centro Habana municipality, with an Ecosystemic approach, and that allows generating actions on the state of health of that population and propitiating a higher welfare. It was coordinated with the Municipal Government and the community. It used a guide with an approach of Health and Ecosystem. Initially, it was carried out an analysis of the existent information on each health sector; it was made an assessment of the residents' necessities and risk perceptions, a survey for individuals and relatives about living conditions and diseases and study of environmental risks.

The Project was conceived as a combined design and it was planned in three stages:

  • Stage I: Analysis of the health situation and its main determinants,
  • Stage II: Planning and execution of interventions and new projects,
  • Stage III: Interventions’ assessment.

It put a group of methods and integrate techniques into effect at a scientific level, with a theorical foundation at an international level, for decision and action making, which can not only be applied to a specific municipality, but also to the rest of the country. It allowed carrying out a multidisciplinary and intersectorial work at level of popular advices, giving results that acted positively in the community.

Socially, it generated a group of projects for research-development that contributed to the improvement of health and well-being of a municipality and groups and specific risk areas.

In the economic aspect, it allowed mobilizing national and international material and financial resources. Organizations like UNDP, OPS and Canadian and Belgian ONG contributed to the development of this research, and that makes a total ammount of 604 000 USD.

24 sub-projects, most of them in execution, were derived from this research that started in 1995. It was published in two international magazines and 8 works in national magazines.
