Summary:

In the last decades of the 19th century, some studies were carried out to elaborate methodologies in the design and construction of underground building works. The 20th century passed and these have a local and forecasting character adjusted through empiric coefficients for different regions.

This work offers a forecasting methodology for the design and construction of underground building works sustaining its scientific bases for our country, being selected the following parameters:

  • Evaluation of the rock massif,
  • Selection of the traverse section's form,
  • Stability criteria to execute the work,
  • Load regime on the fortification.

The interaction of these parameters defines the behavior of the work in its stability.

The periods of the research were gathered in the scientific results "Gallery Fortifications" and "Mining Pressure and Construction of Galleries", obtaining a prize granted by the Ministry of Higher Education (MES) in 1977.

During the last decades, the results obtained in each stage have been applied in the underground works of the country due to experience and national prestige.

The monograph "Underground Constructions" offers a new methodology for the design and execution of underground excavations, enriching the most up-to-date international tendencies with the experiences and characteristics of our country.

This work is endorsed by many authorities of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR), Ministry of the Construction (MICONS), Ministry of the Basic Industry (MINBAS) and People Power.
