2001 | Study and management of citrics viroids in Cuba
Main executives entity: Tropical Fruit Growing Research Institute
Main author: Juana María Pérez.
Summary:

It is an important work giving the solutions for the management of citrics viroids, undertaken by the group of authors . It allows the availability of viroid free germoplasms for the establishemnt of plantations, where conventional and state-of.the-art technologies have been applied to obtain the exposed results. As a consequence of the elimination of viroid caused losses, a profit equivalent to 200 000 tons/year can be reached, with a value of 8 millions of USD.

Viroids cause growth and production reduction up to a 50%. Research undertaken to study citrics viroids, which have allowed:

  • Describe the symptomatology associated to viroids under field conditions.
  • Prospections of deseases caused by viroids in citric producing areas (affecting 85 species, varieties and citric forms in all regions of the country, with an incidence between 2-97.8%), being Naranjo Valencia and Pomelo Marsh the most affected ones. Naranjo Valencia y el Pomelo Marsh.
  • Diagnose of citrics viroids: Indicating plants were introduced for diagnos. A Cuban hybrid was obtained, which reduce time and has better quality of symptoms. It implies a diagnose cost reduction to 6.17 USD and 71.42 USD.
  • Sequencial electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel (sPAGE) was standarized, as well as the hybridation of nucleic acids (HAN), having a 10 times greater sensibility and allowing the identification of CVd IV, with no previous information about the ones introduced in sanitation and quarantine programs.
  • Viroids present in Cuba were hcaracterized, and variability in each case was determined. Pathogenic and non pathogenic variants were differentiated. This constitutes the first results of viroids characterization in Cuba. Cuba.
  • Isolated characterized of exocortis viroid were used in the control of sweet orange tree size grafted over citranges Troyer and Carrizo, in order to obtaine greater plantation densities obtainig precociousness without influence on fruit size, ripe rate and Vit. C, and a greater yield accumulated in the first five years.
  • Establishment of viroid caused deseases management which includes certified material and elimination of affected plants.

The work has a total of 9 supports of production agencies and research institutions, 3 of them international with 13 publications, several of them in very prestigious journals.
