The genetical material will be effectively used in national improvement programs, introduced directly in production or used in the interchange with foreign institutions, taking into account the importance of the subjected crop in traditional population food and its demand.
Characterization of the existing Xanthosoma genre germoplasm variability was undertaken in the Arceas Germoplasm Bank of the Tropical Viands Research Institute (INIVIT), composed by 12 clones. According to the morphoagronomic evaluation and with the use of multivaried analysis, genotypes were differentiated and the most important variables for characterization were determined. It was defined a list of 13 minimum descriptors, 6 of them not previously recommended by IPGRL. Cariotypes analysis determined the presence of 2n -26 cromosoms in the White and Yellow group and 2n 24 cromosoms for the Purple group.
The study of esterases, peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase was useful to prove the existing variability isoenzymatic systems. It was determined the presence in Cuba of X. Sagittifolium, X. Violaceum, X. Brasilense, X. Atrovirens and Alocasia macrorrhiza. This result constitutes a reliable methodology to characterize Xanthosoma germoplasm, out of a wide collection, what is done for the first time in Cuba and the world, hence its scientific novelty.
