Main executives entity: University of Havana(UH)
Main author: María Antonia Marqués Dolz.

This result has been introduced through the publication of 7 scientific articles and a university course. It obtained the Prize in the 2000 competition of Political Publishing House and the Prize to the Best Result in Social Sciences of the University of Havana (UH) , in 1999.

It is the elaboration of her doctorate thesis, and constitutes a historical study about the Cuban industrial non-sugar or non-tobacco sector in the enunciated period, sector which the author, following whatJulio Le Riverend , calls "small industries."

It is the first important historical study on the subject, presented with independence of approaches, and contrasting and debating other authors' opinions, with no fuss or spectacular nature.

The author demonstrates a high scientific level that is expressed in her ability to sort the study's difficulties, outlined by herself in her Introduction. In view of the lack of decisive sources and indispensable previous studies, the author has known how to extract the maximum information from documentary sources of Cuban and Spanish records, and, very outstandingly, from the press and periodical publications in general, which she has subjected to an exhaustive and rigorous revision. It is also outstanding her correct use of statistics and charts, made by herself in many cases. Also, she has used an extense, appropiate and updated bibliography.

In spite of being a subject prone to aridity for the high number of footnotes, not only referential but also illustrative and explanatory, and for the enormous volume of information that offers, the work keeps a rigorous coherence, also reached by its correct expositive classification of topics by chapters. And although this work is intended for persons interested in the economic history of Cuba, her appropriate writing makes it accessible to a public interested in Cuban historical matters.

It is a providing work in its specific topic, of singular importance for the economic history of Cuba, able to qualify and specify, with enough and solid foundation, approaches and opinions poured by prestigious scholars until the moment.

Its contribution is not only in the knowledge process of our past, but in the valuable reference to think about our present, in moments in wich it is discussed in some economic means how Cuban future specialization profile should change, which should be the space and role played by the state company, and by individual producers (freelance) and how these should be organized.
