2001 | "Rational use of of soft limestone in foundation layers of pavements".
Main author: Luis Emilio Serrano Rodríguez.
Summary:

The investigation presented as a thesis for a doctor’s degree, shows that calcareous materials (limestone) very common in Cuba and locally available, can be used in the construction of roads, highways and airports replacing the so-called traditional materials (crushed stone), less common and with higher costs of extraction and transportation.

The use of limestone in roads reduces the costs of pavements, specially in relation to fuel consumption and has secondary effects in the environmental impact due to the reduction of the use of fossil fuels and also of the air pollution due to stone mills.

The approval of the corresding Cuban Standard makes easier its introduction and generalization in the country’s policy for the construction of roads as reported by the General Director of the National Road Center, which rules all matters related with roads in Cuba and the Technical Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Construction.

Cuba has 44 000 kms of roads and rural ways and only 17 000 of them are paved. To the extent that the economic growth motivates a traffic growth, many ot these rural ways will be paved, because driving on paved roads reduces up to a third the transportation operational costs reducing fuel and tires expenses. In many of these investments the use of calcareous materials for foundation layers can contribute to make them cost effective.  The scientific value of the work done by Engineer Serrano lies in the study of this problem according to he Cuban conditions, evaluating the deposits, establishing the specifications for suitable materials, standardizing calculation and construction procedures in order to create a Cuban Standard.
