2001 | "Contributions to the development of aeolic energy in Cuba ".

This work describes a series of researches carried out by the candidate since 1974 in relation to the aeolic energy in Cuba and aimed mainly to water pumping and electric generation.

In the results presented play an important role the transfer and development of technologies, prospection of winds and the solution of problems for their use in the specific and special conditions of Cuba. Several applications are shown as well as projects development, components manufacture for pilot applications, studies for specific solutions and proposal for the extension and generalization of this technology.

The work developed by this candidate has made possible the official nclusion of aeolic energy in the program of electric generation of the country, as acknoledge by the leading bodies of energy policy.

One of the results achieved, the “Prospection and Preliminary Assessment of Aeolic Potential at Five Cuban Sites with the Purpose of Aeolic-electrical Generation” opens the way for the development and application of this technology by studying other sites. Regarding the sites studied, the author states that it is possible to get between 100 and 450 mw. One of the recommendations of the study is to install a demostrative aeolic plant with a power of 1 mw at Santa Cruz del Norte.

The economic and technical feasibility of this work is detailed in the report . The MINBAS has included as an alternative the aeolic-electric energy in its program for energy development and aeolic technology is part of the program for the Development of National Energy Sources approved by the Council of Ministers and the National Asambly on 1993.  

In demostrating for the first time in Cuba that aeolic energy is usable at certain sites in order to generate electric energy in different areas of the country, which have been identified and mapped with practical purposes, begins an era of producing electric energy from renewable resources not affecting the environment due to the reduction of oil consuption. In the references as well as in some of the articles published by the author it is reflected that aeolic plants are at least as efficient in relation to the investment as conventional ones with substantial reductions in the operation because they do not consume energy. Another effect is the reduction of costs in relation to the investment and transmission of autonomous facilities.l If a 5% of the electriciity needed by the country is generated by aeolic facilities (this is the potential), there would be an equivalent reduction in the oil consumption for electricity generation.

The diffusion of technical and scientific results has been carried out through several publications, paper works, courses in Cuba and abroad and is duely refereced. The author’s work in Cuba has attracted the interest at events and publications of important international scientific societies linke to aeolic energy. The candidate is the author of the Windmills Handbook edited in Cuba. His translation into Spanish of the book Practical Aeolic Energy written by the American author Paul Gipe was edited in Spain. Specifically in Cuba, his partial results on this topic have been acknoledged as scientific achievements at different teaching levels. Some of his results were awarded with different prizes on 1993 and 1994 and also at base organization, municipal and provincial levels during the 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th Fora.
