2001 | Effectiveness of the use in experimental models of septic shock of synthetic peptides that neutralize the toxic activity of LPS.
Main author: Manuel de J. Araña Rosaínz y Maribel Guerra Vallespi.
Summary:

This work gathers evidences that support the development of therapeutic modalities for the sepsis and other clinical conditions with high associate mortality, based on the use of synthetic peptides with anti-endotoxin and immunomodulator activity.

The study also collects important scientific contributions that contribute to the knowledge of pathophysiology of sepsis and of possibly protective mechanisms. These peptides protected the experimentation animals that had received a lethal inoculum of gram-negative bacteria and also polibacterial inoculum. This protective effect was evidenced by a significant survival increment regarding the animals which were not treated. One of these peptides (LALF 31-52) demonstrated to possess antiviral activity when inducing the production of Alpha and Gamma Interferon. It is also demonstrated the competition with the LBP (LPS Binding Protein) that is involved in the pathophysiology of diverse autoimmune diseases and the potential action of peptides as inhibitors of the bacterial translocation that constitutes a secondary damage in systemic syndromes of diverse etiologic origin.
