Main author: Ibrahim Hidalgo de Paz.
Summary:

The author proposes to determine the causes that made possible United States’ interference in the war against Spanish colonialism, with the support of most of political and military forces in the Island, despite the anti interfering tradition of cuban revolutionary movement and antimperialist speeches of José Martí.

It is possible to establish in this work the historical circumstances that determined the ascent of Estrada Palma to decisive positions, with the support of non traditionally pro-independence elements, which came through the revolutionary ranks, and how their internal contradictions and weakening led to a decision making that allowed the yanqui interference in the independence war.

This book provides novel information related to the concerned period, specially about the relationships between the Cuban Revolutionary Party, the Government Council and the military mandate in the island, after Marti’s death. In the same way, it is also refered in detail Tomás Estrada Palma’s behaviour to own the Delegation of Cuban Government abroad, specially in the United States, and the way in which this position was used to favor this country’s interference in Cuban matters. The topic has been approached with a considerable scientific level, which is expressed in the used sources, both the bibliographic and the documentary. It is as well a work indispensable for the period’s analysis; it can be considered a contribution to Cuban historiography, mainly in independence studies.

The result has been introduced in teaching, mastery conferences, presentations in scientific events and publications. It has deserved prizes and acknowledgments, including the Annual Research Prize 1998 of the Ministry of Culture (Center for Research and Development of Cuban Culture "Juan Marinello").
