Summary:

The work makes scientific-technological contributions to low input cattle-raising through the proper use of gramineae associate to leguminous plants as an alternative to repalce food deficit in the less rainy season. These contributions are valid in Cuba and in other tropical regions of Latin America.

It was studied in a multidisciplinary way the arboreous leguminous plant Leucaena leucocephala in silva-pastoral systems to 100%, providing solutions such as: the recommendation of new ecotypes and varieties to extend the use of cut fodder, direct browse and as a shade tree; the production of seeds; the agrotechnical aspects according to the load and the type of animals, and its repercussion in ruminal physiology; animal production and the environment. It was demonstrated the effectiveness of short-cycle species insert for weed control. It is also reported as a novelty the collection of Rhizobium specific stumps for brownish-gray soils, vertisoils, and red ferralitic soils. It was also demonstrated that the new recommended ecotypes influenced weight increase in animals for fattening and milk in milking cows without negative effects on the ruminants’ health. There were carried out studies about the protein-energetic supplement in animals, in order to increase the productive efficiency through a good ruminal activity.

These results have been introduced in 1542 livestock units of the country, mainly located in Havana, Matanzas and Holguín provinces. The results of this work have received prizes, presented in scientific events and published in 72 articles in magazines, 28 of these in the Cuban Magazine of Agricultural Science (Revista Cubana de Ciencia Agrícola); in 4 contributions in scientific arbitrated monographs, 6 books and 3 pamphlets.
