Summary:

This work offers a solution, sustained on scientific knowledge, to a new phytosanitary problem, unprecedented in Cuba or in other countries from the area, which appeared in Cuba in 1997. The intricacy of the problem is due to the complex of Steneotarsonemus spinski acarus and Sarocladyum oryzae fungus, causal agents of empty panicle and putrescence of rice sheath, which caused many losses in this cultivation.

Some of the scientific contributions of this work are: the identification of these agents; their biological characteristics and the ecological conditions; the determination of their natural enemies under our conditions, among these, a new species for science and three new reports for Cuba; the syndrome characterization, their national distribution, intensity and economic importance; and the behavior of some varieties and hybrids of interest. On the base of this knowledge, it was created an integrated handling program in cultivation, which is nationally applied and has contributed to diminish the effect of this syndrome in the country. It was required for its implementation a wide training work of professionals, technicians and producers in the methodologies of registration and control of these agents, as well as in the handling of the complex by means of some legal, physical and phytothecnical measures.

The results of the work have been rewarded, presented in scientific events and published in 18 articles of scientific magazines (2 were accepted in prestigious magazines and 1 was published in a regional circulation magazine).
