The Self-Organized Criticism theory (SOC), developed in 1987, is one of the most polemic ideas in contemporary Statistical Physics. The dynamics of avalanches that take place when an Ideal Pile of Grains is slowly excited, through the addition of grains from above, is its main paradigm. According to SOC theory, the distribution of avalanche sizes in this pile should follow a power law, as the distribution of avalanche time.
The authors have conceived and carried out some researches in Cuba that demonstrate experimentally the paradigm operation in piles of real sands, discovering that the resulting dynamics of avalanches offers the explanation to the called "noise 1/f" of Nature, which have been searched for so long. The obtained results have been published in Physical Review Letters international prestigious magazine.
