Médico epidemiólogo. Su principal aporte a la ciencia mundial fue su explicación del modo de transmisión de la fiebre amarilla: la hembra de la especie de mosquito que hoy conocemos como Aedes aegypti.

This result has significant contributions for the integration and analysis of the available information on Cuban marine environmental conditions:

  • records of fish species in Cuban waters,
  • behavior, processes and reproductive strategies according to species' ecology,
  • feeding and alimentary habits,
  • trophic relationships, age and growth of the main species,
  • main physiologic processes and their interrelation with species' ecology,
  • a historical synthesis of fishing in Cuba, including the main arts and fishing methods,
  • as well as an analysis of the current situation of the main resources with recommendations for their rational exploitation.

The researches carried out have been registered in many scientific publications and technical reports. The most outstanding are three books, the first one published in 1984 in the USSR, the second one in 1994 in Mexico, and the current version was revised and enlarged for its publication in English by the Smithonian Institution of the United States, which is considered one of the most important ecological studies in marine fishes from Latin America and the Caribbean.
