Main author: Gilberto Quevedo Sotolongo.
Summary:

The general mathematical formulation for the introduction of the Method of Limit States (MEL) in the geotechnical design of Cuba is defined allowing to establish, with a unique aproach, the particular formulations for every different geotechnical design. Once defined the basic design equation for the use of MEL, the application procedures for safety coefficients are detailed, as well as the establishment of the mathematical formulation supporting it, developing an integral methodoloy for the calibration of such coefficiens which has no record in international literature. Besides, the mathematical formulation is established in order to match the partial safety coefficients of MEL with the global safety coefficient of the global safety factor method, which allow to evaluate the designs done following both methods.

Based on the results achieved, a series of regularities or invariants in the application of the probabilistic methods of great theoretical and practical value for the generalization of this theory at international scale were defined and a unified safety coefficient system to be used in the geotechnical designs by MEL in Cuba was established. These results, which have been a contribution to the design procedures, were obtained through the research carried out , particularly in relation to superficial foundation, slopes and piles. The results have been applied succesfully to the geotechnical design of superficial foundations, walls, slopes and piles, situating Cuba at the advanced group of countries regarding this subject.

The main reported applications were at Cubalse Shopping Center, DonAire hotel and another hotel in Granma, representing a considerable economic saving. It has several recommendations and acknowledgements of the bodies engaged in this subject, including one given by the Peruvian Engineers College and another one by the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences. The results achieved with this work have been presented at three events, one of them held abroad, and have been covered by 12 articles, 5 of them published by outstanding foreign reviews
