2003 | Aplication of statistical multivariate methods to the analysis of migrations in Cuba, from a survey
Main executives entity: University of Havana (UH)
Main author: Cristina López-Callejas Hiort-Lorenzen.

The work is the result from years of research and teaching in the area of data analysis, using mainly statistical multivariate methods. It was demonstrated, beyond the expectations, that there are still many possibilities to exploit the database obtained from the National Survey of Internal Migrations.

There are applied in the research with high scientific rigor, the techniques of factorial analysis of simple correspondences; factorial analysis of multiple correspondences and logistical regression analysis. These kinds of analysis are not frequently used in the field of demography, and their application in this particular case contributes to demonstrate hypothesis, as well as to supplement the studies that have been developed so far in the country on the important thematic of internal migrations.

From the mathematical point of view, it is not frequent to find works with a practical application using such an important survey, since generally, most of researches in this area are theoretical.

It has resulted an effective combination of mathematical disciplines applied to demographic sciences. The works clears the way and establishes the guidelines when approaching the demographic research. It can be stated that it is a good example of mathematical statistics application to social sciences. On the other hand, it constitutes a contribution to social sciences themselves, for the results that reaches in the migrations’ analysis.
