In order to clarify natural relationships among Cuban representatives of Verbenaceae (Magnoliophyta, Magnoliopsida) and to generate a new classification system, the systematic revision that now concludes, applied classic and modern methods to study 2 497 Cuban and 1 598 Caribbean specimens that were used as reference (of 19 Cuban and foreign herbaria), which made possible demonstrating the presence of 14 genuses and 56 species.

The work includes differentiation keys, accepted name and synonyms (with the original source), typification, description, variability, taxonomy, geographical distribution (mapped) and data related to micromorphology, palynology, cytology, reproductive biology, phytochemistry, economic importance and state of conservation of each taxon. It also adds illustrations, precisions on the naturalization of non-indigenous taxons and databases on examined specimens. It specifies that 9 taxons constitute endemisms; it summarizes information about the utilitarian value of 23 species and it bases the existence of17 species in danger of extinction. 4 new taxons were described for science, it introduced modifications in the nomenglature of 16 (15 new combinations and 11 range changes), 13 nomenclatorial binomials were typified (10 of them established by Linneo for taxons of world wide distribution) and there were carried out 33 significant phytogeographic contributions.

The results were published in 33 scientific articles (included 10 of international character, 2 of highest level in its specialty) and they were disclosed by means of 33 reports presented in 26 scientific events (21 with international participation and 1 considered the most important in the world in its specialty).
