Summary:

It constitutes a higher stage which ends a broad and devoted researching related to the erradication of poliomyelitis in our country path.

The results of this research prove the high sensibility of the used surveillance system. It is also presented the antecedent of the desease during the sixties.

There is a WHO proposal to develop in Cuba new researches which answer the questions asked by the scientific community. The results are supported by several publications in important journals and by national and international awards.

This work includes some reserches involving:

  • Awarness of children population´s exposition to the virus..
  • Determination of the prevalence of poliovirus in chidren´s feces.
  • Determination of vaccinal Poliovirus persistence in sewer waters.
  • Determination of desappearance curve when supressing oral antipolio vaccine.
  • Surveillance system on seweer waters.

Scientific Impact:

  • Confirmation of the limited vaccinal Poliovirus circulatuion after immunization campaigns.
  • Proof of the used Surveillance Sytem high sensibility.
  • WHO´s recognition of the use of sewer waters in surveillance of Acute Flaccid Paralysis and its application to avoid future outbreaks.
  • Usefullness for the international steps to make to descontinue worldwide vaccination.
