The Self-Organized Criticism theory (SOC), developed in 1987, is one of the most polemic ideas in contemporary Statistical Physics.

The dynamics of avalanches that take place when an Ideal Pile of Grains is slowly excited, through the addition of grains from above, is its main paradigm. It is reported in this work an entirely new mechanism for the formation of piles of real sand, which contradicts SOC paradigm and which involves two original "dynamic phases". The phenomenon is characterized in detail through experiments carried out entirely in Cuba; and it is suggested a simple phenomenological mechanism to describe it. The original report was published in Physical Review Letters (FI-7) magazine, and it was chosen the Best Scientific Article of University of Havana in the Research balance of 2003
