Summary:

Some of the priorities for the work in botanical gardens, on a national and international basis, are "ex situ" conservation, identification and monitoring of species, determination of impact causes and their mitigation, "in situ" conservation, "ex situ-in situ" integrated conservation, environmental education for conservation, etc. This work on the conservation of threatened endemic species was carried out by Cuban botanical gardens from 2000 to 2004. The results were the following: there were carried out floral inventories of four protected areas, with the report of new taxons for Science and for Cuba, there were inventoried the threatened palms and their location in protected areas, there were monitored 19 threatened species in different ecosystems. Also, it was established, for the first time, the "ex situ" cultivation of 83 endemic species, as well as "ex situ-in situ" conservation strategies for 18 taxons., it was created a software to handle databases of endemic species and live collections, it was established the conservation state of 164 taxons, it was elaborated the Red List of Cuban Vascular Flora, with 1 414 taxons, being compiled all the previous information, and it was elaborated the program of environmental education for the conservation in botanical gardens. These results constitute an original knowledge contribution and conservation of species of Cuban threatened endemic flora and the ecosystems in which they live, at the same time, an instrument for the conservation work of threatened plants, endorsed by many specialists and foreign institutions and by the recognition of the University of Havana to the best result in environment protection.
