Inventor italiano. Considerado como uno de los pioneros de la comunicación telefónica por vía eléctrica. Vivió en La Habana entre los años de 1834 y 1850, donde realizó sus primeros experimentos telefónicos.

Scientific impact: This work presents some new computer tools, from which software MSEQ stands out, integrated in a computational platform that allows the massive analysis of mass spectra, allowing the quick sequencing of peptides, the analysis and separation of species, the extraction of quantitative information in differential expression experiments, as well as the statistical analysis in the search of molecular targets. Until 1999, MSEQ was the only software for the sequence of novo peptides worldwide, and it is still competing in the current market with good benefits, and it is regularly used in important CIGB's projects related with proteomics. The work includes Web services to study species in complex mixtures, which includes new algorithms for the analysis of superimposed signals, superior to those previously reported in scientific literature. This work also includes a tool for the statistical analysis and biological interpretation of the results obtained; taking advantage of the knowledge gathered in publicly available gene ontology databases.

Economic impact: These tools have become commercial software products, and they were licensed to JEOL and Biological Japanese companies. It has represented incomes of 130 000 USD to the country. Also, this work has favored the exchange and the scientific collaboration with important leading companies and institutions in this field.

Social impact: This work is framed in the context of the expectations motivated by the sequence of complete genomes, including human genome and the possibilities of genomic and proteomic techniques for the discovery of molecular targets, the design, development and evaluation of pharmacos that have had and will have short-term repercussion on health, feeding and conditions of Cuban population's life, as well as on its fauna and flora.

References: This work has been published in seven international prestigious magazines referred in the Science Citation Index. Also, there are fifteen reports in international events, ten of them carried out abroad. It has the Certificate of Protected Work of MSEQ software's royalties for the sequence of novo peptides. This work has achieved the Annual Institutional Achievement of the Center of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in 1995 and 2004.

Conclusion: It is a developed state-of-the-art software worldwide that has promising social implications given its application in Cuban Biotechnology.
